  3. perceptual organization on the 
  4. M├╝ller-Lyer illusion: if one 
  5. attends to the red lines, the 
  6. space on the left appears to be 
  7. larger than the one on the 
  8. right; if one attends to the blue 
  9. lines, the opposite is the case.

  11.     The figure to the left 
  12. illustrates the assimilation 
  13. process in another version of 
  14. the M├╝ller-Lyer figure. If one 
  15. concentrates on the red lines, 
  16. the space on the left looks 
  17. longer than the one on the 
  18. right. If one directs attention 
  19. to the blue lines, the space on 
  20. the left appears to be shorter 
  21. than the one on the right. 
  22. Attention here affects 
  23. perceptual organization, and 
  24. this in turn creates the crucial 
  25. impression of connection 
  26. between the spaces and the end 
  27. lines. This figure is also 
  28. evidence against other theories 
  29. of the M├╝ller-Lyer illusion, 
  30. especially those that explain it 
  31. exclusively in terms of such 
  32. factors as eye movements, 
  33. blurred images, or lateral 
  34. inhibition. The fact is that the 
  35. stimulus input from each half 
  36. of this figure is identical.
